Congratulations to
everyone who took part at Shipley Park today - runners of all ages from 6 to
86, and a real mix of experience and people new to our brilliant sport.
We were especially pleased to welcome so many newcomers giving
orienteering a go for the first time (really hope you enjoyed it - come back
next time!), as well as older orienteers testing out the new-style Very Short
Green course. Feedback about our event is welcome, please email me (nicjhart@gmail.com).
A
big thank you as always to all our volunteers on the day for their hard work
and for helping to make it a fun, friendly and welcoming event.
Finally
a mention for the kindness of a NOC runner who hauled me bodily out of a deep
ditch and up a steep muddy bank - thank you!

I
hope we made the most of an area which has not been used for a Level C event
before and, had we got Crich Chase or Lindop, still wouldn't have. I must
confess to having a quiet sob every time it rained this week, and to cursing
the clay capping on the area which means it can't drain as freely as it might
otherwise.
Firstly,
apologies to those on Blue for 6 and 9 being juxtaposed. This is a pet hate of
mine and I was horrified when it was pointed out to me. And to those who found
the nasty brambles around 152. There's always something that can be done
better, or differently.
However
I am pleased with as much as I am disappointed with viz the number of new
people who had such a good time, the fact that of the 266 competitors, so few
mis-punched or retired, that we had 13 on the Very Short Green and all
finished, the (very weak) sunshine, the generosity of those who offered help in
whatever capacity, whether it was advising newcomers, tweaking the map as trees
fell and were subsequently removed, and all without complaint.
Is
Shipley a good enough area for a Level C? Opinions welcome.
Jane
